Jordan Spieth and Smylie Kaufman may be exceptional golfers but kayak fisherman they are not.

After completing their opening round at the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii, former world No 1 and two-time major winner Spieth and world No 103 Kaufman decided to make the most of their afternoon.

Decked out in boardshorts and mini-flippers, the two friends awkwardly set out from the beach at Waialae Country Club with rods in hand.

But if their entry to the kayak had been funny enough, their exit was practically hilarious.

Attempting to navigate the moderate-sized waves and make their way back to sure, Spieth and Kaufman did not make it far into the breakers before their vessel was turned sideways and flipped, dumping the duo into the drink.

To make matters worse, the pair also had their cellphones on the kayak.

And while Spieth had his in a plastic bag, Kaufman did not follow suit and had to put his into a bag of white rice when the soaking golfers finally made it back to land.

Perhaps it was best they stuck to the putter and the five iron, not the paddle or the fishing rod, in future.
